• INTRODUCTION
Between May 11 and August 30, ]995, the proposed Bowie rY 2 mine site was
visited and sampled in compliance with Rules 2.04.10 and 4.15. The proposed
disturbed area is located within Sections ]0 and 15 of T 13 S, R 91 W, 6th P. M. east
of Paonia in Delta County and lies between 5950 and 7100 feet elevation. Four soils
are shown as existing in the disturbed area, according to the S it Survey of Paonia
Area. Colorado. These include soil types 12 (Beenom-Ahsarokee Loams, 5-20%
slopes), 62 (Progresso Loam, 6-12% slopes), 74 (Torriothents-Haplargids Complex,
very stony), and 75 (Torriothents-Rock Outcrop, sandstone complex). Sampling was
performed to quantify vegetative parameters for major communities in areas that may
he disturbed during proposed mining operations and to match disturbed communities to
reference areas. Vegetative cover, herbaceous productivity, woody plant density, and
species diversity were estimated on both proposed disturbed and reference areas within
the permit area. Major communities within the disturbed area include Juniper
Wcwdland, Mixed Shruhland, and Disturbed Meadow. Reference areas were matched
to the Juniper Woodland and Mixed Shrvhland communities. A reference area was not
evident in the vicinity (within the permit area) which would match the Disturbed
Meadow baseline area. Additionally, the Disturbed Meadow community was
dominated by annual and noxious plant species. It was decided that success would he
better evaluated based on a technical standard rather than on aweed-dominated
reference area. Sampling was carried out by Matthew S, Hayes of Hayes
Environmental Services, Inc. and Ms. Kay Brady of Bowie Resources, Ltd.
Coordination with the State of Colorado was accomplished in conjunction with Mr.
Tony Waldron of the Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG).
u
1
