• *** MS Reference area ***
General Information (MSref): A single contiguous Mixed Shrub reference
area was able to be chosen. As with the baseline area, cover transect values were high
and consistent, ranging from 60 to 84. The minimum 10 samples was sufficient to
provide an adequate sample, exceeding the calculated value of 3.2 (Table B9). Fifty
production plots were sampled as were 10 woody plant quadrats. A picture of the
reference area is included in the back of Appendix B.
Absolute cover (MSref): (Tables A4, B2) Total vegetative cover was 68.8%.
Perennial, non-noxious species combined for 68.4% absolute cover. Table B10 shows
that the two areas were statistically equivalent at the 90% confidence level.
• Relative cover (MSref)_ (Tables A9, BS) The reference area was much less
diverse than the other areas. ONy seventeen species were sampled (only one annual
species) and transect species number averages dipped to 6.4, lowest of all the five areas
sampled. The three dominant species were those that were dominant in the baseline
area as well.
Only four species had relative cover values higher than 3~'a. These included
Gambel oak, serviceberry, snowberry, and mule's ear (a perennial forb). Annual cover
was nominal.
Production (MSref): (Tables A14, B7) Almost 94% of the herbaceous
production was from perennial, non-noxious species. Although the total productivity of
222 pounds/acre was almost identical to that in the baseline community, the reference
•
IS
