• Gambel oak, serviceberry and snowberry cover extensive
portions of the strip mine study area and big sagebrush and
_ mountain mahogany occur frequently on the underground portal
study area.
I-3.10 Rare, Endangered and Threatened Species
No rare, endangered or threatened plant species listed
by the Plant Information Network, Fort Collins, Colorado,
1979 were located on or near the study area. Special surveys
- were undertaken during spring, mid- and late summer.
I-3.11 Study Area and Reference Area Statistical Comparison
A one-tailed t-test for the mountain shrub and
pinyon-juniper types was performed to compare the homogeneity
- of study area and reference area plant communities. Cover,
production and density were each tested at the 95~ level
of significance (p = 0.05) and the calculated t value was
_ compared to the t value at infinity degrees of freedom
- provided from Table III of Fisher and Yates: Statistical
Tables for Biological, Agricultural and Medical Research.
The calculated t values on both vegetation types for
tree and sh-ub density and production in the pinyon-juniper
type were less than the observed t value (Table 17) indicating
- no real statistical significance between the differences

- 40 -
