I` • Shrubs averaged 3548.2 shrubs/acre in the pinyon-juniper
_ ,
type. Reference areas averaged 3462.8 shrubs/acre
(pinyon-juniper) and 11,238.6 shrubs/acre (mountain shrub)•
Table 13 lists the means, standard deviations, number of
samples taken and needed and the level of adequacy attained•
The species, distance and height of each shrub recorded during
density measurements is listed in Appendix E.
I-3.6 Species Diversity
- The control area for the mountain shrub vegetation type
exhibited the highest species diversity index (5.48) followed
by the pinyon-juniper, big sagebrush, mountain shrub - north
_ facing slope, pinyon-juniper-control, and mountain shrub
_. with indices of 3.80, 2.98, 2.86, and 2.64, respectively
- (Table 14)•
The formula used in determining the above indices places
L sore emphasis distribution of species than the total number
of individuals in a vegetation type. This is shown by the
C fact that the lowest diversity index was observed in the
-- stratum (mountain shrub) with the highest number of species
` recorded (Table 14)•
~- I-3.7 Shrub Heights
Shrub height weans for all types on both study arras
r are listed in Table 15. The tallest shrub species for all
L
,..
L
-35-
