~.
~~ I-3.3 Production
r
f
• The big sagebrush type had the highest understory
production (637.5 lbs/acre) on the study areas Yollowed
by the pinyon-juniper type (292.5 lbs/acre) (Table 8). The
mountain shrub type had the third highest production (257.8
_ lbs/acre) and mountain shrub - north facing slope type had
'the lowest production (91.0 lbs/acre) on the study areas.
Total production for the two references areas averaged 211.5
• lbs/acre on mountain shrub and 87.4 lbs/acre on
pinyon-juniper.
_. Perennial grass and forb species comprised the majority
of the production. for all vegetation types except big
• sagebrush. Production of grasses snd (orbs ranged from 42~
of the total on the big sagebrush type to 82~ on the mountain
shrub type. On the study areas, grasslike, half-shrubs and
-- annuals comprised less than 45~ for all types except big
- sagebrush where annuals (particularly grasses) comprised
over half of the total production.
_ Table 9 summari2es production data in lbs/acre,
_ kg/hectare and g/m2 for the study areas. Means, standard
deviations, number of samples taken and number of samples
- needed to meet suggested sample adequacy are listed in Tabls
10. Sample adequacy was attained for all types and the
reference areas.
~~.
- 24 -
