Colorado Cultural Resource Survey
Prehistoric Archaeological Component Form
(page 1 of 3)
Use this form in conjunction with the Management Data Form. One of these forms should be completed
for each site with a prehistoric component.
1. State Site Number: SRT1370 2. Temporary Site Number: MM-5110
3. Site Type: campsite
4. General Site Description: This site is a lithic scatter located on a terrace north of an east-flowing
intermittent tributary of Fish Creek. There is aneast-west sandstone ridge, part of the Twentymile sandstone
bowl, to the north, the rolling ridges of Twentymile Park to the east, a fallow field, now a grassy pasture,
to the south, and 1-Iillbeny Mountain to the west. Highway 131 is located 200 meters to the west. The site
extends from the base of the south slope of the ridge to the edge of the north bank of the drainage aad is
bounded on the east and west by seasonal tributary drainages. The terrace is relatively flat with
microtopography of undulating swells that gently slope towazd the creek. The soil is a light yellowish brown
sand with a darker brown sand underlying it, as evidenced by the rodent backdirt piles. Depth of deposits
is unlmown, although there is good potential for buried cultural materials. The vegetation is thick and
dominated by tall sagebrush and includes rabbitbrush, bitterbrvsh, lupine, yarrow, grasses, and other forbs.
The vegetation on the surrounding landforms is similaz with the addition of mountain mahogany to the north
and riparian grasses to the south.
The site consists of a thin scatter of lithic debitage, two chipped stone tools, and a piece of groundstone.
There is one small concentration of flakes, mostly small biface thinning flakes and pressure flakes. The
materials in the concentration include chert, quartzite, and one quartz flake. A small piece of burned bone
was observed in this concentration. Over the rest of the site, the flakes aze very thinly distributed and are
dominated by tertiary chert flakes, mostly biface thinning flakes. Several quartzite flakes, mostly tertiary,
were also noted. Chert colors include white, brown, tan, pink, banded tan and brown, speckled gray, and
a translucent white. Quartzite colors are white, gray, and red. There are three tools oa this site, two chipped
stone tools and a piece of groundstone. The chipped stone tools include a biface, and a utilized flake. The
biface is fragment made from white quartzite. The utilized flake is a large chert flake that appears to have
been used as a scraper. The groundstone is a unifacially pecked and ground thick sandstone slab.
The artifact assemblage on this site is relatively small, but there is one concentration, possibly
representing an activity azea, and several tools including groundstone. There is excellent potential for buried
deposits as this site sits on low-energy alluvial deposits with few impacts observed on the surface. In
addition, there are good indications that it contains additional subsurface cultural remains.
The site is recommended as potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register, and it is
recommended that the site either be avoided or tested to collected further information.
5.
