MINED LA~WILDLIFE STATEMENT/EVALUA~N (Revised)
for limited impact and select regular mine applications
The following information pertaining to wildlife is provided for
use by Mined Land Reclamation Board in their consideration of a
mining permit for:
Calhan Clay Pit; E1 Paso County; T12S-R62W-SE1/4S8 & SW1/459
Name/Type and Location of Mine (Legal)
Wildlife Species List: Red-Tailed Hawk, Swainson's Hawk, Rough-
legged Hawk, Prairie Falcon, Pronghorn, Mule Deer, Coyote,
Songbirds, Shorebirds, & Waterfowl.
Endangered/Critical Species/impacted: Possibly Mountain Plover
(Federal Category 2 Candidate Species) otherwise none known.
Critical Habitats/Vegetative Communities Impacted: A 1-2 acre
wetland is located in the SW1/4 of Section 9 and has wetland
associated plants including cattails, willows, and other aquatic
emergent species. Several larger willows are associated with the
drainage that runs north/south in the northeast portion of the
property in Section 8. The remainder of the property can be
characterized as shortgrass prairie.
Assessment of impact: With proper setbacks from wetland and
riparian habitats and proper reclamation the impacts to wildlife
and wildlife habitats should be minimal. These habitats are
uncommon in eastern E1 Paso County and provide valuable habitat for
numerous wildlife species. We recommend that active mining and
access remain clear of riparian and wetland habitats. Proper
measures should be taken to limit exposure of soil to wind and
water erosion, and to minimize increasing sediment loads into
existing drainages. Mining and reclamation should be phased to
minimize the amount of disturbed and impacted lands.
Mine Reclamation Recommendations (include key species/habitats for
which restoration is designed): All measures, including the use of
setbacks, to minimize impacts tc riparian and c•~etland areas and
vegetation should be taken. If loss of trees is unavoidable
replacement of 3 trees replaced 1 tree lost is recommended.
Mining and reclamation should be phased to minimize the acreage of
disturbed land at any one time. Topsoil should be stockpiled in
upland areas and seeded to prevent erosion if left in place for
longer than six months. Revegetation should utilize native species
of grasses and forbs present on the site prior to mining. The site
should be fenced to exclude livestock grazing until adequate
vegetative cover is established and the site has been successfully
reclaimed.
Prepared By: Lyle Sidener, DWM Date: 03/22/93
Submitted By: Dave Lovell, Wildlife Biologist Date: 03/23/93
This statement is void if not processed within 1 year.
This analysis does not constitute approval of application.
