~ Ill llllllllllllllll F~¢~ T~- : -
United States Department of the Interior a~ ~' `
~~
FISH .4ND WILDLIFE SERVICE
NATIONAL ECOLOGY RESEARCH CENTER -~~^
4512 McMurry Avenue
Fort Collins, Colorado 80525-3400
In Reply Refer To:
FWS/Region 8/NERC April 10, 1991 File: W123
Robert Baldwin, President
West Arapaho Soil Conservation District !~
730 Sirnms Street, Suite 416
Golden, CO 80401
Dear Sirs:
This letter serves as a record of expenditures and progress report of our
work at the Coal Creek site through March 31, 1991.
Prooress Report: We have continued monitoring of the fifteen wells, with
depths-~to-water being taken every 2-4 weeks. Attached are schematics showing
the groundwater profiles for our four cross-sections.
We have also established a crest-stagge gage within the study site. We
attached the gage onto the bridge (#30-22.8) where Quincy ( Airport) road
intersects with Coal Creek. This type of gage allows one to determine what
the highest flow on the stream was since the last measurement was observed.
It is our hope to have four such gages installed by May 1. Each crest-stage.
gage will be installed with a staff-gage, which allow one to read the level
of flow that the stream is at while the measurement is being taken.
Recently, we acquired aerial photos of the study site. Presently, we have
photos from 1986, at several scales. We have on order a series of photos
from the USDA-ABCs Aerial Photography Field Office that will cover the period
between 1950-1985. We also have an order in with the National Archives,
Washington, D.C.> to provide us with a set of photos for 1937. Our interest
in acquiring these photos is, of course, to better understand the site's
history, so as to better understand the site's current conditions.
Plans: Beyond the continued monitoring of the wells and the gages, we plan
to conduct a site-survey within the next quarter. Our goals are several: 1)
7o survey in the locations of some 800 individual trees that fall within our
four transects; 2) To conduct atraverse-survey, so as to connect the four
transects and to create an accurate large-scale topographic map of the site.
Expenditures:
Chargeable to West Arapaho Soil Conservation District:
i) Crest-stage and Staff gages 5237
ii) Travel 5345
iii) Field Tech Salary 5315
Total $897.00
