The 5 Mine discharge consists of two pumps each with its own
meter. A new meter was purchased and installed on one of the
pumps. The meter which was removed was sent off for testing and
rebuild. Results of the testing before and aftE:r rebuild are
included for your review. The rebuilt meter was theen installed on
the other pump so both meters are new and are functioning well.
My review of the data indicates that past problems have resulted
from two things. 1) One of the meters failed for a period of time
in 1985 and 1986. 2) Discrepancies between meter readings and
weekly flume readings at the discharge point.
Flume readings are not representative of the average discharge from
these pumps. This is because neither discharge from the pumps or
weekly sampling is random. The pumps are on a timer and only run
for a specified time each day. Sampling at the flume is done
weekly and is not correlated with whether or not the pumps are
running. As a result, flume measurements for some periods are
always taken when pump is off and for other periods when pump is
on, therefore, largely over or underestimating real discharge from
the pumps.
Obviously I was not present at the mine during the period of time
involved, so may not have all the details. Please contact me if
there are further concerns which need to be addressed.
Si, erely
Terrell Johnson
Environmental Coordinator
TKJ/js
~~ ~, [ ~`~
~\ ~~ ~ ~~~
~~
cc: Jim Nalven
