• 2.04.9
^ RESPONSE continued
The Cryoborolls were mostly included with Chernozems and
Brunizems in the 1938 classification as modified in 1952. Because
they are very cold and commonly are inaccessible, they have
received relatively little attention in the United States (1).
The Lymanson soil series belongs to the subgroup Argic Cryo-
borolls.
Argic Cryoborolls
Soils in this subgroup have an argillic horizon but otherwise are - _
like Typic Cryoborolls. Slopes of these soils in the United
States range from gentle to strong. Some of the soils support a -
coniferous forest, some have a cover of grass, others have
aspen trees, and still others have mixtures of these plants.
These soils are moderately extensive in the high mountains of
• the western states (1).
The Splitrosoil series belongs to the subgroup Lithic Cryoboroll.
Lithic Cryoborolls
These soils have a shallow lithic contact. Because hardrock is
present at a shallow depth, they are permitted but are not
required to have a calcic horizon, a mollic epipedon that is
between 40 and 50 cm thick, or a pergelic temperature regime.
There may be a Iambic horizon or a ca horizon between the
epipedon and the rock, or the epipedon may extend to the rock.
Slopes of these soils is the United States are mostly strong or
very strong, and the soils are used mainly for summer grazing
(1).
The Winevada soils series belongs to the subgroup Pachic Cryo-
borolls .
•
