Site Specific Soils
•
l J
•
Four basic soil pedons occur on site. The first
(map unit UF) is found on Elat to very gently slop:
grassy areas. The second pedon (map unit FA) is si
map unit UF, but occurs under a forest canopy. Pedc
(map unit GO) exhibits characteristics quite differ
those of map units OF and FA, These soils have fc
very gravelly glacial outwash.
The fourth mapping unit (MS) are those areas that w
turbed during other periods of mining that have p<
for either fill material or a source of suitab]
growth material. Generally, this mapping unit has i
from the leveling of hill tops or ridges by bulld
allow for the easy maneuvering or working of mininc
ment. When these earlier disturbed soils were mo
parent material was exposed, and in some instances t
was side-cast, providing a suitable and highly 1
plant-growth medium source.
Map Unit OF
A typical profile for this unit occurs in open are
the dominant vegetation is the bunch grass Arizona
In some areas encroachment of pine is occurring,
protected and with adequate moisture retention, s~
occurs. Slopes in this unit generally range fro
percent (UFA phrase), though in some areas the s]
range from 5-158 (UFB Phase). Soils within this
unit area are well drained with moderate permeab:
Erosion hazard due to wind and water is moderate.
Map Unit FA
if these
ng open
nilar to
n three
ant from
rmed on
're dis-
tential
e plant
esulted
~zers to
equip-
~ed, the
~e solum
~calized
as where
fescue.
Where
gebrush
i 0 to 5
ape may
mapping
lilies.
Soils of this unit occur under the forest canop The
dominant tree species is lodgepole pine with aspen and very
small amounts of spruce interspersed. Dominant un erstory
vegetation is kinnikinnick; this combination of ov rstory
and understory is the habitat type Pinus contorta/
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi.
Two phases of the FA map unit occur
FAA, on slopes of 0 to 5 percent, and
15 percent slopes.
Soils within this map unit are well dr
rapid permeabilities and may or may
cobbly profiles above the C horizon.
unit have moderate erosion hazards.
within the a ea: the
the FAB, on the 5 to
ained with mod rate to
not have grav lly or
Soils within his map
27
