The gold Baring
gravels located in this area are primarily gla ial in
origin. These gravel deposits are Eelt to be the lat ral and
possibly some terminal moraines left by the last retreating
glaciers. This final retreat occurred during the Wi consin
geologic time period. Today, these moraines ap ear as
gently rolling, grassy hills with large open mining uts to
the east of the town of Alma. The deposition o these
glaciers appear to be largely unchanged by sub equent
erosion actions east of the river. West of the river, where
stream action and man have destroyed the distinctive struc-
tures of the gravel deposits, sands and gravel appear to be
the same composition as the eastern more obviously lacial
gravels. The gravels and sands in the Alma Mining District
are largely granitic gneisses with a small percen age of
sedimentary, volcanic and metamorphic materials The
sizing of the gravels is estimated in Table 3.
TABLE 3
Sizing Estimates of Gravels on the Alma Group Cla ms
•
Plus 24 inch rocks - few above 36 inches
Plus 6 inch rocks minus 24 inch rocks
Plus 2 inch rocks minus 6 inch rocks
Sands minus 2 inch rocks
Clays and very fine sands
' 108
108
308
408
'108
25
