INTRODUCTION
The CF&I Steel Corporation operates the Allen Mine located
35 miles west of Trinidad, Colorado.
Allen Mine is an underground coal mine. Disturbance to the
land results from storage buildings, construction activities, roads,
power lines, railroads, waste disposal, and the mining entrance.
The A11en Mine permit area encompasses three vegetation types:
L
~`
the Ponderosa pine-Douglas fir-oak (Pious ponderosa-Pseudotsuga
menziesii- uercus gambelii), Ponderosa pine-oak (Pious ponderosa-
uercus gambelii), and Willow Carr (Salix exigua) types. Affected
areas and reference areas of each vegetation type were inventoried
for vegetation cover and production by major species and species
categories. The term affected area refers to the actual vegetation
type sampled. Density of trees, shrubs and saplings in each type was
also obtained. The results of the inventory were used to identify
dominant species in each type.
1
