CHIMNEY ROCK MINE
A hydrologic monitoring program was implemented at the Chimney Rock Mine located 20 miles southwest
of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, in October 1980. This program currently consists of three surface stations
located on StolBteimer Creek which Rows adjacent to [he mined areas. The results of monitoring activities
Cor the period of March, 1991 are summarized in the following paragraphs with summary data sheets attached.
SURFACE WATER MONTfORiNG
Surface water monitoring was conducted at three locations on Stollsteimer Creek (S-1, S-2 and S-3). Flow
conditions were average for this season of the year. Flow measured at stations S-1 and S-3 were 54.65 and
50.12 cfs, respectivcly. No flow measurement was taken at station S-2 due to the substantial flow. Crest gauges
examined at the three stations indicated no crest at station S-1, 1.70 feet at S-2, and 0.45 at S-3.
Water quality samples were collected at each of the three surface stations during the March sampling.
The water is classified as a mixed calcium-magnesium/sulfate-bicarbonate water with relatively low
concentrations of metals and mineralization. The parameters of TDS and iron exhibited an increase from
station S-1 through S-3. No oil and grease was found in any of the surface water samples.
A spring and seep survey was conducted on March 28, 1991, in the area of the mine pits and surface
disturbance area. A small seep was observed in the reclaimed area approximately at the rock underdrain
location out of the east pit. Values for conductivity and pH of the seep were 1975 micromhos and 8.2 units,
respectively. Several other seeps were noted along the stream bank of the AVF area near surface station S-2.
