Somerset did attempt
to perform the scheduled monitoring on an unrecorded date in
January and on February 21st. The monitoring scheduled to be
performed during January and February is as follows:
1. Springs 7 - 11
2. North Fork of the Gunnison River - Upstream 6 Downstream
3. Nine Ephemeral Drainages
4. Portal Drop Inlet
5. Monitoring Wells SC-1, SC-2 and SC-3
An attempt was made to monitor Springs 7 - 11 during both January
and February. The sample point for Spring 8, the Oliver Mine, is
located at the north end of a culvert in place under old State
Highway 133. It was frozen and snow covered during both times
sampling was attempted. The remainder of the springs were also
frozen and snow covered.
The Divisions letter indicates the North Fork of the Gunnison River
was open and flowing according to Division photos taken on February
23, 1994. Somerset does not dispute this fact. However, there was
ice along the bank of the river that made it hazardous to collect
water samples. Somerset was working with the Colorado School of
Mines (CSM) during February and March to initiate and aquatic
impairment study. Personnel from CSM needed to get into the river
to perform sampling for the study. On March 9th, Somerset notified
CSM that ice on the river bank had melted so the study could
proceed.
During both January and February the nine ephemeral drainages were
monitored and found to be snow covered. None of the drainages had
