<br />Evaluation of Proposed Hlasting at the AC.A Riprap Quarry near BuCna Vista. CO <br />1,0 INTRODUCTION <br />ACA Products, inc. (ACA) plans to develop a quarry to produce riprap near Buena Vista, CO. <br />i he site of the proposed quarry permit area in Chaffee County is located near a Roller <br />Compacted Concrete (RCC) Dam that was recently constructed (1998-2001). Daring the <br />permitting process, the Colorado Depanment of Mines and Geology has expressed concerns <br />abottt potential etti:cts that blasting might have on the existing Trout Creek RCC Dam located <br />l50 feet away lium the northwest corner of the proposed riprap mining area. <br />ACA has retained Gordon F. Revey (Author) oFREVEY Associates, Inc. (RAI) to evaluate this <br />concerns, and if practical, to reconunend specific blasting limitations to ensure the protection of <br />the RCC Dsm. Information used in this evaluation regarding the dam and its geological setting <br />v;as gained from the dam desigrt report (Spann, ?000) and a site characterirtttion study (lrish, <br />year not lmo~vrt). Note that other information <br />about general blast effects is included to acquaint the reader with imponant technical aspects of <br />discussed subjects. <br />2.0 BLAST EFFECTS <br />When explosive charges detonate in rock, loos[ of the energy is used in breaking and displacing <br />the rock mass. However, some of the energy is released in the. form of transient stress waves, <br />which in turn cause temporary ground vibration. Detonating charges also create rock movement <br />and release of ]tig}t-pressure gas, tvhictt ittdttce air-overpressure and audible blast noise. <br />In the very-hear zone, crushing usually occurs in the rock around the charge. The extent of this <br />cotnpressive and sheaz failtue zone is usually lirttited to one or two charge radii. Beyond the <br />Plastic cntshing Anne, the rock nr ~rrnmd is temporarily defnrnied by elastic strain waves. For <br />some distance, tangential strain intensity exceeds the rock's strength and new fractures are <br />acated.
