Limited-Results Cultural Resource Survey Form (page 3 of 17)
V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23. Location of Files Search: Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation; Bureau of Land
Management, Little Snake Resource Area Date: 6/28/96 & 7/1/96
24. Previous Survey Activity
In the project area: Numerous previous inventories of drill hole locations (MZAI 1980, 1983; UNC
1978; WCRM 1980; Gordon & ICranzuch 1979); two well pad and access road surveys (La Plata 1988;
Powers Elevation ]989); two Class II studies (BLM 1979; LOPA 1977); small linear surveys (Pioneer
1979; Mariah 1995). Three Class [II block surveys of mine permit azeas (Pioneer 1979 & 1982; Univ.
of Colorado 1976). The 1982 Pioneer block inventory covered a large portion of the current project
area. Core holes 4, 6, 7, 8, 38, & 47 aze located within this previous inventory block.
In the general region: Several large studies including LaPoint (1987), Grady (1984), Walker-Buchanan
and Naze (1993), Metcalf et al. (1994). Numerous small projects related to energy development.
~'. LITERATURE REVIEW (continued)
25. Known Cultural Resources
In the project area: Thirty-one sites (SRT171, SRT278-SRT30S, SRT3S9, SRT897) and sixteen
isolated finds (SRT172, SRT306-325) have been recorded in general area mostly during the Class III
block survey in 1982. Three are in close proximity to two proposed drill holes (SRT281, SRT298, &
SRT302), but none are within areas inventoried during the current project. Sites consist of historic
structures and buildings and prehistoric lithic scatters and open architectural sites. Twenty-two of the
sites are not eligible for inclusion on the National Register and seven need more data for an eligibility
assessment.
In the general region: Hundreds of sites in general region, mostly to the north and west of the current
project area.
26. Expected Results: Based on small size of project area and low site density as indicated by previous
investigations in the project area, few cultural resources are expected. Those encountered are expected
to be tnostly prehistoric and historic isolated finds. Low probability for small lithic scatters and historic
structures and/or buildings.
~ I. STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
27. Identify and assess any cultural resources within potential area of effect
~'II. FIELD METHODS
28. Definitions: Site: Five or more artifacts or a feature, structure or trail, or any combination of these
elements meeting OAHP criteria in a discrete location that is believed to represent the
locus of patterned. human activity.
IF: Four or fewer artifacts without evidence of or potential for additional cultural
materials or features in the immediate vicinity.
29. Describe Survey Method: Radial azeas surveyed in spiral pattern around centerstake. Blocks surveyed
with series of transects spaced IS meters (SO') apart. Linear access roads and road upgrades surveyed
with zig-zag pedestrian [ransects covering 15 meters (SO') either side of centerline.
VIII. RESULTS
30. List IFs, if applicable. Indicate IF locations on the map completed for Part III.
A. Smithsonian Number: SRT1216 Description: O_ne piece of glazed stoneware
B. Smithsonian Number: Description:
C.
