-7-
deposits within the valley bottom and fine to coarse mlluvium in the
higher plateau area. Topsoil depth ranged from approximately 1/2 to •
2 feet within the valley bottom area to as deep as 5 feet in the
plateau area. Existing fill was also encountered in proximity to the
Bear Mine acd railroad spur areas between depths 1 to 8 feet. The
fill consisted of clay and gravel and coal waste.
The fine sands and silts encountered in the valley bottan are
generally loose to medium dense and extend to depths 3 to 14 feet.
The underlying coarse granular soils are relatively dense and range to
boulder size material. On the flatter plateau area, stiff to very
stiff and medium plastic clays with scattered to frequent bedrock
fragments are mast predominant. Gravel to boulder size rock fragment
material was encountered in the soil near the west end of the plateau
(borings X11 through D-15) and on the higher sloping azeas (borings
I-2 and I-3). ,
Sandstone with interbedded shale was encountered at depths 27.5
and 36 feet in the valley bottom area (borings J-1 and B-1) and at
19 feet near the water storage tank (boring I-2). Bedrock was not
encountered in the remaining pond areas to the depth explored,
25 feet. Clay soils were encountered along the upper road section in
borings A-6, A-7 and A-8.
Bangles obtained during the exploration program were subjected to
various laboratory tests to determine their standard properties, shear
strength characteristics, permeabilities and settlement/swell poten-
tial. Results of laboratory testing are presented on Figs. 11
through 44 and summarized on Tables I through IV.
•
