Within the past 10 years
material has been excavated and used as select borrow for a CDOT project, and for road
surface stabilization in conjunction with a USFS watershed restoration project. The
material to be excavated lies in a deposit averaging approximately 15-25 feet in depth.
The deposit is an estimated 225 feet in width, extending an estimated 400 feet through the
hill.
Topsoil and vegetation in the area of the proposed site is very sparse. The natural
decomposed granite extends to the surface in most areas. Past excavation has occurred
along the north face of the site. The excavated face currently consists of a I:1 slope of
decomposed granite approximately 175 fee[ in length x 20 feet in height, with a relatively
flat pit floor immediately north of the face approximately 230 fee[ in width x 200 feet in
depth. Due to its rocky nature, the pit floor does not support any vegetation.
The site is located in a sparsely populated, fairly remote location in the north end of
Jackson County.
Permanent man-made structures within 200 feet of the site include:
• Colorado State Highway I251ies approximately 235 feet north of the north edge
of the existing pit floor.
• A highway right-of-way fence running parallel to State Highway I25 lies
approximately I50 feet north of the north edge of the pit floor.
A spring Lies approximately 250 feet northeast of the site, beyond the area of proposed
excavation. This water source originates at an elevation approximately 20 feet below that
of the proposed final pit floor elevation.
There is an existing access road which will require routine shaping and blading
to provide needed access and maintain positive drainage.
