In the years since my husband (now
decreased) and I purchased our land here, the water level has
dropped some 15 (fifteen) feet.
Gravel mining has become much more agressive in the past 4 or
5 years and the company who leases the adjoining property has
recently started opening up operations right up to our
property line.
It recently became necessary for two other parties and myself
to obtain a permit and to drill a new water well, since we
are not on the City of Greeley's water supply, and therefore
are dependent on our well water for all of our domestic
needs. It is therefore crucial to us that our water rights
be protected.
One neighbor-was without water-for one-year, until our new
well was drilled. Perhaps this was partially due to the drop
in the water level. Another lost the well he used to irrigate
his yard because the aquifer from which our only source of
water comes is being drained by these gravel operations.
My question to you is: What can be done to protect our
rights and, indeed, our property (which would be worthless
without water)? I and my neighbors all would greatly
appreciate your attention to the matter. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ella May Gibson
