ESPEY, HUSTON & ASSOCIATES, INC.
Engineering & Environmental Consultants
• 7800 EAST UNION AVENUE. SUITE 930
DENVER, COLORADO 80237
(303) 6940808
NOME OFFICE
P.O. BO% 519
AUSTIN, TEx~S 78767
July 11, 1983
Department of Natural Resources
Mined Land Reclamation Division
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
Attention: Mr. Jim Herron
Reclamation Specialist
RE: EH&A Job No. 3507
Storm King Mines
Deaz Jim:
• This letter serves to document the scope of studies for the soils and vegetation
programs that was agreed upon for the Storm King Mine neaz Glenwood Springs.
This work program is the result of severa3 telephone conversations and three (3)
meetings at the MLR offices: 1) 06/10/83 with J. Herron; 2) 06/24/83 with
J. Herron, S. Emrich, and B. Munson; and 3) 07/08/83 with J. Herron and S. Emrich.
The results of previous studies were reviewed to determine the extent of work that
would be required.
Soil s
The previous soil study was determined to be adequate since it covered sufficient
detail for both the surface facilities and the waste disposal areas. The only
additional work required is to supplement the samples that were collected by
horizon with a set of samples from each series by six-inch depth intervals. These
samples would be analyzed for the same parameters as the others.
Vegetation
After reviewing all existing data and development plans, a satisfactory vegetation
study program was developed. Additional cover, production, and shrub density data
would be required. Because the predominant vegetation type in both the surface
tacilities and waste disposal areas is sagebrush, it was decided to use the same
reclamation standazd for both areas. Because the surface facilities area had been
previously disturbed by mining and overgrazing, a three (3) acre fenced reference
area to be used to determine the reclamation standazd will be located near the
waste disposal area. Cover and production will be adequately sampled both on the
waste disposal area and within the reference area, and shrub density will also be
. recorded. A minimum of five lines will be run within the surface facilities area to
show that it is similaz to the other areas.
