When the permit was
issued in September 1982, concern was expressed to the division over the more
restrictive total iron at outfall point 001 than at 002 and 003. The reason
given was the high design discharge of the pond compared to tte potential low
flow in Hubbard Creek. Total iron has been a problem since. Lately the iron
levels have been worse than usual. After this last reporting Further invest-
igation was done to determine the source. The mine discharge is the major
inflow into the pond but recently springs were found contributing water. Water
samples were taken from the mine discharge, the springs and the 001 discharge.
The attached analysis form shows very little iron from the mine water compared
to the spring or the pond discharge. With the discharge even higher we believe
that the spring sampled as well as springs with higher iron content are the
cause of the high iron discharge. These springs are inside the pond and can
not be easily diverted around the discharge point.
Attached is a letter to Robert Shuttle of the permits station requesting changes
in our CDPS permit that should take care of the problem. The First proposed
change is to remove the mine water From the pond toaallow longer settling and
oxidation times for the springs. The second proposed change is raising the
total iron limits due to design changes made in the pond.
If there any further questions, I can be contacted at 929-5911 or 856-6402.
Yours truly,
./ ~
,~--~ D/~,~~
Larr~M.
