• 4
Old Car: The fenders and body of an old car, probably dating from
the 1920's was found on a northwest facing slope adjacent to an
abandoned road cut. hfa Y,e and model of the car were not determined
and it was recorded as an isolated find rather than as a site.
Bottle Dump: NW/NE/SE/SE Section 27. A post 1950's bottle and tin
can dump is located near the old car just oEf thz abandoned road cut.
Its location was plotted, but it was not recorded.
Chert Flake: Sw/NE/SE/SE Section 27. A single small chert flake was
found on an exposed east slope. No other material was associated.
Biface: N4i/SE/Sw/SE Section 27. A small, medium flaked discoidal
shaped granular cher t. biface was found on a gentle east slope adjacent
to Williams Draw (Fig. 5). The location is a promising one for a
prehistoric site, but intensive inspection of the surface, and an
adjacent road cut failed to turn up additional cultural material.
Recommendations: As outlined in the individual site descriptions
above, the two prehistoric sites warrant further study if they are to
be imoa cted by mine related surface disturbance. Specifically, SJ A415
appears to be a prehistoric camp site which is entirely buried in
mixed alluvial/colluvial fill adjacent to a modern seep in 4li lliams
Draw. Based on the location of the site, the lack of surface
manifestations, and the material eroding from cu*_ banks near the seep
the investigators feel there is a likelihood of buried cultural material
of an unknown level of significance. Four test pits, two placed
adjacent to either side of the wash, supplemented by several pits
10 to 20 meters west of the sezp ~.:ou1d be adequate to determine the
nature and extent of prehistoric cultural deposits for significance
evaluation. The results of this testing wculd result in further
• recommendations depending on what was revealed in the test pits.
At SJA416, there is potential for shallowly buried cultural material
in a mixed colluvial aeolian fill. Two test pits, one placed adjacent
to the site's main concentration, and the other placed about 10 meters
to the southeast would be adequa*_e for this evaluation. Thorough
data retrieval of the site would probably take a crew of two persons,
one day for mapping, and 4 to 5 days for controlled stripping of the
shallow fill.
No further field work is recommended at an•: of the ether localities
recorded in the field. Some documentary research concerning the
Conrad Coal Mine is warranted, but the physical remains of this mine
are so badly deteriorated that little data could be retrieved through
field investigations.
Therefore, cultural resource clearance is recommended for the 680
acres surveyed except for the arias immedia toly surrounding SJA415 and
SJ A416.
i
•
