This investigation confcrms with the reouir em ents
of Executive Order 11593 and applicable historic preservation laws.
Antiquities Permit No.: 79-CO-023
Date of Investigation: October 11-18, 1979
Location/Description: Block survey of 680 acres of prospective coal
lease tract on federal lands as follows: T9h7, R78[~7, Secticn 22,
Nw ;, [J'; NE ;, SE; NE :, Wt5 SE4: pection 26, NS•7y S[4;, SE; S[J ;; Section 27,
EI5 NE ;, SE :, JaC kson County, Colorado.
Map Reference: Gould NW and Johnny Moore !•fo untain, 7.5' series
USGS Ruadrangle.
File Search: A files search conducted by htr. Tom hlanabe at the
Kremmling Resource Area Office of the BL^t indicates that numerous
previous surveys have taken place in the general area for oil and
gas locations and coal leases, but none of the specific tracts
ccvered by this study have received previous survey. Likewise,
several prehistoric and historic sites have been recorded near the
study area by various investigators including the Laboratory of
Public Archaeology at Colorado State University, and the North Park
Project of the Lin iversi ty of Cole rado. No previously recorded sites
or sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places are
• located in the study tracts.
Env.ronment: The survey area lies in a high mountain park, worth
Park, a major feature of north central Colorado. All of the lease
tracts lie on a broken to rolling divide between the Canadian River
on the east and the Plichigan River on the west. Both streams are
tributary to the North Platte River. Terrain within the survey
blocks varies from relatively flat uplands in Section 2?, to steep
ridges and hills in the southern sections. The areas drain into
the Canadian River via northeasterly flowing washes, Bush Draw,
[4illiams Draw, and an unnamed tributary of [•7i lliams Draw. The major
washes are fairly open intermittent streams with seeps along their
courses.
Vegetation covers 10-305 of the ground with the around visibility
considered good. The survey area lies primarily in an upland grass-
sagebrush steppe. Vegetation along the washes tends toward a higher
grass to sagebrush proportion. Other species include prickly pear
and forties of various sorts, but shrubs and trees are absent.
The soils in the area are almost uniformly sanc_v to sa r.dy clays with
a thin mantle of pebble sized stones of fluvial oriein. On ridges
lag pebbles and cobbles are more preva le nr than in *_he draws. Soils
in the draws are deeper, but similar in character, with old soil
surfaces exposed in cuts.
