•
7
of extensive buried deposits is present, and this possibility can only
be checked through test excavations.
Evaluation: This site does not appear to have National Register
potential from its visible evidence. However, the site's location
near natural surface water and the presence of relatively deep fill
necessitate the gathering of more data through test excavations before
a fair evaluation can be made. In any event, because the site is out-
side the permit boundary and because it will not be disturbed by Kerr
Coal Company, the integrity of the site is not threatened.
5JA416 NE/SE/NW/SW Section 26;
This site consists of a small, moderately dense scatter of
• primary core reduction flakes of basalt, and lesser quantities of
chert flakes situated on a gently east facing slope just west of
Bush Draw (Figure 4). Some fire racked river cobbles may indicate
the presence of a partially eroded hearth. Fi11 at the site appears
to be the result of simultaneous colluvial and aeolian deposition and
is composed of a sandy clay matrix with inclusions of river pebbles
and cobbles. It appears shallow from surface evidence, but may be
from 20 cm to SO cm in depth.
The site has a good upstream~ownstream view, but except for
proximity to a major wash its location is not distinctive. The site
appears to have been a small campsite. A single finely flaked side
and basally notched projectile point (Figure 5a) recovered from the
surface is suggestive of a Late Prehistoric Period occupation.
•
