5
•
hafted biface can be tentatively assigned to a temporal and cultural
period, The key is the notching, which occurs on the side of this pro-
jectile point. Side-notched projectile points with similar morpho-
logical features (such as an expanding concave base) have been typo-
logically assigned as Late Archaic (2500-1500 B.P.) or Late Prehistor-
ic (1500-150 B.P.) in age (Lischka and Miller 1978: 13-16). Further
temporal and/or cultural specifications are not possible, however.
No other cultural material was associated with this projectile point.
Isolated Find (0307 (IF 307)
An isolated flake fragment, designated IF 307 was found in the
• southeastern portion of the survey area on the tap of the terrace. The
flake fragment is broken in several places, with the largest fracture
occurring at the proximal end (see Appendix 1). In its present con-
dition, the flake fragment measures 18.2mm in length, 17.9mm in width,
and 4.7mm in thickness. The proximal fracture has removed any evidence
of the flake's bulb of force. white cortex covers approximately 85-905;
of one face, which indicates that this flake fragment may have origi-
nally been a secondary cortex flake.
Site SJA333
Site SJA333 is an historic site Located in the northwestern cor-
ner of the survey area. This site is an abandoned mine situated at an
elevation of 8200 feet (Mean Sea Level) on the north-northwest facing
• slope of a northeast trending ridge (see Appendix 2). Soils which
were not covered with mine tailings were observed to be a light brown
