5 <br />• of prospective coal Lease areas in North Park (Lischka et al. 1980). <br />This project, administered by the Interagency Archaeological Service <br />and conducted by the University of Colorado under the supervision of <br />Dr. Joseph Lischka, inventoried substantial acreage near the Kerr <br />Permit, including approximately 510 acres inside the permit boundary <br />(Figure 1 and Table I). <br />Subsequent to the North Part. survey, Ke~T Coal contracted with <br />Lischka for survey of an additional 195 acres of survey (Lischka 1978; <br />Montgomery 1979). The 1978 survey covered about 35 acres in the <br />E 1/2 of the W 1/2 of the NW 1/4 of Section 2, TSN, R78W, while the <br />1979 survey covered 160 acres in the SW 1/4 of Section 15 T9N R78W. <br />Late in the 1979 field season, Michael D. ?tetcalf, then of <br />Powers Elevation, was contracted to survey 680 acres in and adjacent <br />to the Pernut Area, of which 370 acres lie inside its borders. <br />Table I identifies the legal coordinates of [his previous research. <br />Sites in the Area <br />Although no National Register Sites are known Pram the area <br />surrourding the Permit, there are n~mierous sites, both prehistoric <br />and historic, within a few miles of the project. These sites have been <br />reported by various irn;estigators including those mentioned above, <br />the BLM, and the Laboratory of Public Archaeology at Colorado State <br />University. <br />Within the permit area, one historic site, the Sudduth Coal Mine <br />(5JA333) is located in the extreme NE of tha S'+1 1/~+ of Section 15. <br />This site was evaluated as being non-significant based on its short <br />I 1 <br />~J <br />
