east of the survey area. These sites overlook Bolton Draw to the
west and the Canadian River [o the east. Site SJA302 represents a
Late Prehistoric and possibly a Late Archaic occupation while site
SJA287 is prehistoric but the specific period is unknown. The locations
of these sites and of most other sites in North Park represent a general
pattern of occupation on the lower terraces along drainages or in [he
vicinity of springs and other water sources. A notable exception to
this pattern occurs on Owl Ridge 'and other high ridges in the Park
where there is exceptionally good visibility of the surrounding area.
The survey area conforms to neither of [he two types of locality
described above. There is, however, a good likelihood of prehistoric
cultural activity along the high north-south ridge immediately wesC
• of the survey area. It seems likely that IF1 represents either material
washed down from [he ridge or sporadic cultural activity connected with
occupation along the ridge.
In light of the above, it is recommended that coal mining activity
4
in the survey area will probably not affect significant cultural resources,
,judging from the surface indications. I[ is possible, but not deemed
likely, that subsurface cultural deposits will be encountered in the survey
area. If subsurface cultural deposits are encountered during earth moving
activities, the BLP1 District Manager, Craig District, should be notified
and further disturbance should cease until the deposits can be inspected
by an authorized professional archeologist.
•
