1
•
INTRODUCTION
This report is intended as a suimation cf all archaeological
and historical research which has occurred on a coal permit area to
be sutmitted by Kerr Coal Co. near Walden, Colorado. This permit
takes in parts of Section 2 T8N, R78W and Sections 15, 22, 23, 25,
26, and 27 of T9N, R79W (Figure 1), a~ a tipple facility on the rail
road in Sections 28 a~ 29 T9N, R79W (Figure 2). Various parts of
this permit area have been surveyed by different irnestigating teams
from 1978 - 1980.
Host recently, Metcalf-Zier Archaeologists, Inc. were contracted

by Kerr Coal to assemble the results of previous surveys, evaluate
the quality of previous research and to s-srvey any undisturbed
ground which was ,judged to warrant cultural resource survey. This
work resulted in a new survey of roughly 440 acres, 3C acres at the
tipple site, and the remainder distributed aroiaid the main permit
area. This survey was conducted order PASP ~80-CA-066, which expires
May 7, 1981.
FNVIRONt~"7T
T`~e coal lease parcel lies within ":orth Park in northern Colorado.
During the cretaceous geologic period parts of Colorado were covered
by a retreating inland sea leaving sandy bC{1ded surface. As the water
receded, a heavy vegetation mat was produced, with subsequent inun-
dations and revegetation over long periods of time, resulting ir, the
present coal beds.
L~
