SHELTON, Director
July 21, 1987
Mr. Richard Mills
Senior Environmental Engineer
Twentymile Coal Company
P.O. Box 897
Oak Creek, Colorado 80467
Re: Bedrock Well Monitoring, Foidel Creek Mine, C -82 -056
Dear Mr. Mills-
The Division continues to be very concerned about the water chemistry of
bedrock wells which have been pulped during the last eighteen (18) months.
First quarter, 1987, water data from these wells continues to show high pHs.
Your correspondence of July 6, 1987, indicates that the sampling procedure
has impacted the water chemistry.
Please verify this during the next full suite monitoring period by sampling
wells 006 -82 - and 006- 82 -48A using both the old method and the current
"compressed nitnogen" method. Run field parameters and major cations and
anions on the samples obtained through the old method and run the normal
suite of parameters on samples obtained through the current method. Submit
results to the Division by October 15, 1987 and discuss the water chemistry
data acquired through each method as well as a comparison with data
collected historically. Describe collection methods in detail.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Catherine W.
