Narrative Descriptions of Soil Map Units -South Taylor Mine <br />Area <br />EXHIBIT 9, ITEM 6 <br />Estimates of salvageable soil and a brief description of each map unit within the ST Mine Area that are <br />located on 25 percent slopes or less are provided below. <br />CVB -Castner-Vandamore Variant Complex 5-25 % slopes have approximately 21 inches of salvageable <br />soil. Excessive stoniness and shallow depth to bedrock will limit salvageability in some areas. <br />This complex includes Castner cobbly loam and Vandamore Variant flaggy sandy loam. These are <br />shallow to moderately deep soils which have formed in residuum derived from sandstone and shale on <br />narrow ridges and mountain sideslopes at elevations ranging from 7600 to 8400 feet. They are well- <br />drained soils with moderate to high permeability. Available water holding capacity is low to moderate, <br />runoff is medium, and the erosion hazard is moderate. The vegetation type is sagebrush-grassland. <br />In a typical profile, the topsoil is cobbly loam, sandy loam, flaggy sandy loam, or sand clay loam 2 to 6 <br />inches thick. The subsoil and substratum consist of cobbly to very cobbly or channery loam to sandy <br />loam, cobbly clay or very cobbly loam about 18 inches thick. Depth to bedrock is from less titan 20 <br />inches up to 40 inches. <br />• CVD -Castner-Vandamore Variant Complex 25-55% slopes have approximately 14 inches of <br />salvageable sail. Excessive stoniness and shallow depth to bedrock will limit salvageability m some <br />areas. <br />This complex includes Castner cobbly loam and Vandamore Variant flaggy sandy loam. These are <br />shallow to moderately deep soils which have formed in residuum derived from sandstone and shale on <br />narrow ridges and mountain sideslopes at elevations ranging from 7600 to 8400 feet. They are well- <br />drained soils with moderate to high permeability. Available water holding capacity is low to moderate, <br />runoff is medium, and the erosion hazard is moderate. The vegetation type is sagebrush-grassland. <br />The Castner cobbly loam and Vandamore variant flaggy sandy loam soils are in parallel families (loamy- <br />skeletal, mixed) and both are less than 20 inches deep. This map unit is characterized by sandstone <br />flagstones on the surface and occurs mostly on convex positions on the mountainsides. <br />DL -Disturbed land is characterized by soils with undeveloped profiles and, therefore, has no salvageable <br />soil. <br />This is a miscellaneous land type that occurs in areas of mining disturbance, drill sites, excavations, or <br />landslides. Drainage, permeability, available water holding capacity, and vegetation type are variable. <br />Runoff is rapid while the erosion hazard is high. The soil profile is undeveloped <br />JBB -Jerry-Burnette Loams, 5-15 % slopes have approximately 0 inches of salvageable soil. The major <br />limitation of these soils may be excessive clay content [n some areas, depth to bedrock and excessive <br />gravel in the substratum may also limit salvage depth. <br />• These are deep soils which have developed in colluvium and residuum derived from shale. They are <br />found on broad uplands, ridges, and mountain sideslopes at elevations ranging from 7400 to 8300 feet. <br />They are well-drained soils with slow to moderate permeability.
