location and sample interval in Appendix 6-5. Effective mitigative
measures will include avoidance; ameliorating reclamation techniques;
blending, dilution, and/or burial by normal overburden/interburden
handling and where necessary, selective handling. These mitigative
measures, listed in Appendix 6-5, are discussed in more detail in Tab
21, Minesoil Reconstruction.
Conclusions. The following conclusions are evident from the overburden
assessment at Nucla Mine:
1. Overburden and interburden information from the Phase I Nucla Mine
OIU sampling area was evaluated and statistically summarized to
define site specific conditions and to select and justify a
chemical and physical parameter list for Mine Areas 2 and 3.
2. There is little lateral variability in the local depositional
environment at Nucla Mine based upon lithologic descriptions,
textural analyses and standard deviation values within the
individual Phase I and Phase II sampling areas.
3. Based upon local variability and relevant research, four sample
holes (one core and three chip sample holes) in Mine Areas 2 and 3
873E, 874E, 875E and 876E were drilled and sampled to accurately
predict overburden and interburden characteristics.
4. A noncontaminating lithium based drill stem joint lubricant was
used at all 1986 sample sites. Air was the only drilling medium
utilized.
5. Based upon site •specific conditions and CMLRD stipulations, the
overburden and interburden parameter list for Mine Areas 2 and 3
included pH, electrical conductivity, acid base potential
(including associated analyses), saturation percentage, iron and
manganese for all samples. Nickel, molybdenum and zinc analyses
were also included for samples collected from site 873E.

6-53 Revised 04/11/88
