• found in overburden strata include calcite
possibly siderite (FeC03). Small accumula
halotrichite (Fe or MgSOG) inay occur as
seams and associated strata in abandoned
1977).
(CaC03), limonite {Fe203) and
tions of copiapite (FeSOA) and
crusts on the facts of coal
open pits (Caruccio et al.,
F. COAL SEAM ANALYSIS. Table 6-5, Coal Searn Analysis, summarizes the
quality of the Upper Dakota, Leaver Dakota and Nucla coal seams for
overburden cores described in the overburden assessment section. Specific
analysis for the mineral marcasite was not perforrtred on any of the samples
listed in Table 6-5. However, marcasite content will be included as part
of the total pyritic content, and is therefore necessary.
G. OVERBURDEN ASSESSMENT. The scraper pits at Nucla Mine, outlined as
Areas 2 and 3 on Exhibit 12-1, Operations Plan, are proposed to be mined
in 1987 and 1988. Both of these areas are located adjacent to
previously mined areas. Overburden, interburden and underburden (OIU)
• sampling for Nucla Mine Permit C-008-81 occurred within 300 feet of .Mine
Areas 2 and 3 (Hole 2C). Seven drill hole locations were sampled for
Nucla Mine Permit C-008-31 to meet the OIU baseline permitting
requirements (see Exhibit 6-3A, Overburden Sample Locations, for
location of holes).
The 1977, 1979 and 1980 OIU sampling program consisted of drilling seven
2-1/8 inch core holes, No.s 1C, 2C, 3C, 4C, 695E, 697E and 775E, at
various locations to be disturbed by mining (see Table 6-2, Exhibits
6-3A and 7-2 and Appendix 6-4). Each core was described and shipped to
Peabody Coal Company Central Laboratory in Freeburg, Illinois for
analysis. The lithologic logs, core description procedures, analytical
procedures and analytical data are contained in Appendic::s 6-1 through
6-4, respectively. Interpretation and discussion of the data is
presented later in Tab 6 within the Parameter Selection section.
Peabody Coal Company utilized a two phase OIU sampling prugrain for Mine
• Areas 2 and 3. Similar phased sampling techniques have been described
by USDA (1979), Barrett et al. (1980), Dollhopf et al. (1981), Barth et
al. (1981), MDSL (1983), Dollhopf (1983), and 'ADEQ (1985).
