I am edified by your concern for the potential <br />impacts to the water, and want to assure you that we are as <br />concerned as you are about preserving and protecting the quality of <br />the water in the River and the adjacent alluvium for the citizens <br />and for visitors to the area. - . <br />In reading over your letter, the principal concerns that I <br />noted, and will address, were the impacts of the gravel mining and <br />processing operation on ground water quality, the threat of drying <br />up ground water wells, and the pollution potential associated with <br />the use of herbicides to control leafy spurge close to the River. <br />You may be aware, the mined land reclamation permit for the <br />Parkdale Project will be issued by the Division of Minerals and <br />Geology (DMG) following a public hearing and approval by the Mined <br />Land Reclamation Board (NLRB). By law, the permit must be <br />protective of ground water. From my reading and interviews with <br />DMG and WQCD technical staffs, the permit does adequately address <br />the potential threats to ground water quality. If the permit is <br />properly administered, there should not be any adverse impacts to <br />the quality of drinking water in area wells. <br />On the issue of drying up area wells, I noted in the draft <br />permit that the project is not going to tap into the ground water, <br />that water to wash the crushed stone has been purchased from Twin <br />Lakes. It is my understanding that there will be no need to use <br />the ground water.
