Four wells were completed between April 5, 1988 and May
5, 1988.
On May 12, 1988, a visible sheen was observed on the surface
of Pond 802. WFC suspects this sh een could have resulted from
the drilling fluids used in completing the above referenced
wells. Drilling fluids may have entered the mine workings where
they were subsequently pumped to Pond 002. WFC was and is not
treating the mine water in anv capacity.
In consequence of these observations, 47FC initiated a
biomonitcring study on May 17, 1988. The results of this study
were report e3 to :7.'C on or about Pray 20, 1968. Pond 002 effluent
exhibited a 458 mortality at the 100£ concentration level for
Ceriodaphn'_a. WFC was notified by the consulting laboratory that
the Mav 17, 1988 study was not conducted according to current
Colorado Depa~~ment of Health Standards. P.s such, the laboratory
requested S~*FC resample so another biomonitoring study could be
conducted.
WFC r e-sampled Pond 002 effluent, Pond 002 influent and
PRS-3 (PRS-3 is downstream from the mine water cischarge in th e
Purgatoire River). The results of this stud}~ shoa•e3 mortality of
Path ead minnows and Ceriodaphnia at the 1003 concentration level
at the inlet and outlet of Pond 002. There was no significant
mortality at any of the lower concentrations. There was no
significant mortality in the river downstream from the mine water
discharge at any concentration level.
