required 16 and 14 samples respectively to exceed their SAC
values (15.3 and 12.1). Finally, the Number 1 Mine New Fan
Site was sampled three times with each transect resulting in a
value of 68 8 cover. Because no variance results from three
transects of identical value, the SAC is equal to zero.
SAMPLE VALUES
1. Refuse Area (Table 1)
Table 1 lists the transect and average cover values
sampled at the Refuse Area, reclaimed in 1986. Total
vegetative cover was measured at 42.3 ~; the bulk of this
cover (98.4 ~) was contributed by perennial, non-noxious plant
species. Perennial grasses and forbs had the highest relative
covers ( 55.5 and 41.7 ~ respectively). Shrub species were
only sparsely located, representing a departure from the
stronger shrub establishment on the other two major
reclaimed areas. Annual grasses, annual forbs, and noxious
weeds contributed less than 1.0 ~ total absolute cover, a
trend that was repeated throughout the mine site.
Total cover (vegetation + litter + rock) was measured at
72.3 $. Bare ground was intercepted on 26.8 ~ of the time,
the second highest value of three major sites.
3
