Box 54
Delta, CO 81416
Re: Benson Red Shale Pit
Mining Application
Slope Stability
Dear Mr. Ripp:
Ute Engineering i3< Surveying Co. was requested to review affects on the slope
stability during the mining operation on the ridge south of the proposed Red
Shale Pit. The mining operation is proposing to mine approximately fifty feet in
depth along the southern ridge of the proposed site. I have visually reviewed the
site along the edge of the ridge. I anticipate lowering the bluff will not cause any
stability issues of the existing slope.
I believe the removal of the soils along the south ridge can be safely provided
with no negative impact to the surrounding area or their operations as long as
the following items are implemented. 1) Installation and maintenance of a sift
fence is provided near the top of the ridge where construction activity is being
provided. The intent of this silt fence is to minimize effects from runoff storm
water and small rocks. 2) Lowering the edge of the ridge will be conducted by
backhoes pulling the material towards the project and not pushing material over
the edge of the ridge.
I hope this information will assist you with the approval of this project. Please
contact me if you have any questions concerning this matter,
Sincerely,
UTE ENGINEERING & SURVEYING CO
/ ~'" C
Tom Cope, .E.
Principal Engineer
~,.~~ ' Pp p ~ R E 6 /ST'~~,~
.~o~p~Q~ps ~oAFq
/~~ ~ .
24995
"_ A~-.. 9~3 0.~~~
~.,,~, •,...,,,,,.,,a~~
