Climatological Information
• Based on the Environmental Analysis, No. CO-010-0-183
prepared by the BLM (see Appendix H}, the climate in the Walden
area is characterized by long, cold winters, short, cool summers,
low precipitation, and a short growing season.
The average annual temperature at Walden, Colorado is 37.1oF.
The average temperature of the warmest month, July is 56.9°F, and
of the coldest month, January is 16.0°F. The average annual
precipitation at Walden is 10 inches. Precipitation amounts
increase in the area as the elevation increases. Since the site
is at a slightly higher elevation, the precipitation is estimated
to be between 11 and 12 inches per annum. Approximately 508 of
the precipiration occurs as snow. The average annual frost-free
period is 40 days.
The prevailing winds are from the west with a moderate velocity.
The peak wind period is generally between 12:00 noon and 6:00 p.m.
. Inversions are commonly occuring weather phenomenon in North Park
and can be expected to occur approximately 808 of the time,
generally during the morning. In the summer, the inversions will
disperse by late morning but in the winter they may remain for
several days. Enclosed in Appendix G is the climatological infor-
mation gathered by Colorado State University.
J
