Consulting Engineers and Geologists
SCOPE
This report represents a geotechnical investigation conducted at the
site of an existing embankment currently being used as a haul road at
-- the Seneca II Mine near Hayden, Colorado.
The investigation was conducted in order to analyze the stability of
the embankment under dry and high water conditions to determine
the amount of seepage expected at the 10 year and 100 year water level
floo8 stages. Hydrological investigation of the site is not within
the scope of this report. The 10, 25, and 100 year storm water levels
used in this investigation were supplied by Seneca Coals, Ltd. for
use in our analysis. (Refer to Appendix G}.
The conclusions outlined in tb:is report are based on data obtained
during field and laboratory investigations and our experience with
similar geotechnical engineering investigations. Factual data gen-
erated during field and laboratory investigation are summarized in _
Figures 1 through 10 and Table 1. Sample calculations are provided in
Appendix D through F of this report.
PROJECT HISTORY AND SITE CONDITIONS
The site is located approximately 9 miles (14.48 kilometers) to the
southeast of Hayden, Colorado (refer to Figure 1, Vicinity Map).
Seneca II Mine is presently operating and the embankment is currently
being used as part of the network of roads used to transport coal to
nearby user facilities. Information has been supplied by Seneca Coals
Limited as to construction methods and the approximate date of com-
pletion for the embankment (summer of 1979?. It is our understanding that
no density or moisture content control was maintained during construc-
tion. The embankment was constructed using on-site dragline equipment
and motor graders. Draglines used in the mining of the side walls of the
drainage utilized coal and overburden spoils to construct the embankment.
-1-
