°~e~~on a-Oy . `1Cz~
2.04.7(2) SURFACE WATER INFORMATION
1,0 Description of Surface Water Bodies
Santa Clara Creek is the receiving stream for all water discharges from
the permit area. It is dry for most of the year and is therefore classified
as an ephemeral stream. There is an abandoned diversion structure on Santa
Clara Creek about one quarter mile downstream (NE) of the town of Pryor. This
location is in the NW~NEC of section 19, T29S, R65W, A diversion ditch on the
east end of the concrete section follows a sandstone outcrop to the abandoned
farm lands on the south side of Rouse Road at the railroad crossing. Both the
diversion structure and the ditch have been completely filled with sediment
and are in disrepair, The diversion dam drops the level of the creek
approximately twenty feet. The toe of the structure is stabilized by the
sandstone channel bottom. Just downstream of the structure, the channel is a
stagnant marsh with thick vegetation, There are no other structures or bodies
of water on Santa Clara Creek within a mile of the mine area.
Pryor Canyon and Black Hawk Canyon are both east-flowing ephemeral
tributaries of Santa Clara Creek, Drainage from one proposed mining area in
. the southwest corner of the permit area will enter a small tributary of
Blackhawk Canyon. Except for bridges at road crossings, there are no
structures or ponds in Black Hawk Canyon from approximately four miles
upstream of the permit area to the confluence with Santa Clara Creek,
Characteristics of Black Hawk Canyon are described in section 2,06,8 (Alluvial
Valley Floor Determination) of this report,
Pryor Canyon is the major watershed of interest in this study since it
contains almost all of the permit area for Pryor Mine, There are no
structures on Pryor Canyon upstream of the disturbed area (west of the section
line between sections 19 and 24). Downstream of the section line, the main
channel of Pryor Canyon has been mined through and reclaimed, (Map 7, Drainage
and Sediment Control Plan). An earth stock dam was removed during mining.
Approximately 1100 feet of channel were disturbed by mining, A rbad crossing
at the eastern edge of the disturbed channel section utilizes two large
culverts to pass flows,
An unnamed tributary of Pryor Canyon has also been disturbed by
mining-related activities, The channel is interrupted by a road crossing.
