partial permit area(see Revised Map 3). The well penetrated down to 85 feet,
• The Cameron seam, the lowest mineable coal seam, was encountered at about a
depth of 69 feet followed by about 3 feet of shale before hitting the Trinidad
Sandstone (see Figures 2.04.7(1)-1, and 2.04.7(1)-2). The drillhole went
through the upper 8 feet of the Trinidad Sandstone without striking water or a
mine void, Drilling was done with an air rotary rig and cuttings were
collected every 5 feet.
Previously, the mine operator had drilled a well in the Pryor Channel to
105 feet before encountering a mine void that contained water. Depth to water
was 63 feet when a sample was collected during our field investigation (Table
2.04.7(1)-7). Like the waters previously analyzed, this water was also high
in alkalinity and total dissolved solids.
Recharge to the Trinidad Sandstone aquifer is from precipitation along
the outcrops and through infiltration from the alluvial deposits over the
sandstone in Pryor Canyon, Santa Clara Creek, Black Hawk Canyon and other
lesser tributaries. The water would then flow downdip to the southwest unless
hindered by faults and dikes. Sufficient data is not available to determine
the role of the faults and dikes that exist in the area with regard to
• groundwater flow. No springs or seeps have been observed along the faults,
dikes or outcrops of the Trinidad Sandstone.
The 1982(2) partial permit area is expected to be a dry pit and no ground
water monitoring would be necessary. Infiltration of surface water into the
Trinidad Sandstone will be inhibited by the shale bed separating the Cameron
seam from the sandstone.
JFSA-30
x ~~ 130
7.6 SATO & ASSOCIATES.
