Revised
October 16, 1981
Interstate 25 and the town of Aguilar, the area has historically been
available for small single resident housing locations. However, housing
development has been at a minimum in the area.
Recreational opportunities in the permit area, particularly for the
hunting of deer, are somewhat limited because of the availability of
water supplies for the animals. The possiblity of recreation on the
permit area, as long as mining activities are ongoing, is highly
unlikely due to problems involved with safety and potential vandalism.
At the conclusion of reclamation activities, recreational opportunitites
of the area such as hunting will probably still remain somewhat limited.
It is anticipated that the majority of the recreation activities in
Huerfano County will remain to be situated with the forest lands located
to the west of the permit area.
Aside from rangeland, the only potential land use to exist following
mining would be the use of the area for small single family dwellings.
However, because of the population limitations found in Huerfano County,
• it would be expected that any large scale residential development in the
permit area vrould be unlikely.
Previous Underground Mining
As mentioned earlier, underground mining activities were carried on in
the permit area for at least 70 years. Historic information regarding
this previous underground mining is found in Section 2.04.4, Cultural
and Historic Resource Information.
Existing Land Use and Land Use Classifications Under Local Law
The Huerfano County Commissioners in conjunction with the Huerfano
County Planning Commission have designated the lands within the proposed
mine and adjacent area for uses of agriculture (rangeland). The land
use in the permit area will be limited to rangeland use mainly for
• domestic livestock and wildlife use; no commercial forestry work has
ever been conducted within the permit area.
~ .~y ~ • V
