This soil has a profile similar to the one described
as 1epresentative of the sel•ies, but the surface and sub-
surface layers are fine sandy loam and in most places
limy gravelly sand is at a depth of about 5 feet.
Included with this soil in mapping are areas of Otero
and Manuel soils. Each of these soils makes up about
10 pel•cent of the acreage.
Runoff is slow. The hazard of erosion is slight in irri-
gated areas and moderate in nonirrigated areas.
This soil is well suited to vegetable gat•dens and irri-
gated crops. The native grasses are mainly blue grama
and sand dropseed. Capability units I, irrigated, VIe-1,
nonil•1•igated; Loamy Plains range site.
LaPorte Series
The LaPorte set•ies consists of shallow, well-drained
soils. These soils formed on upland hills and ridges in
loamy residuum that derived from limestone. The slope
is 3 to 25 percent, and elevation is 6,200 to 7,000 feet.
The avel•age annual precipitation is 16 inches. The aver-
age annual temperature is 48° F, and the frost-free
season is 125 to 145 days. The native vegetation is
mainly foothill grasses.
In a representative pl•ofile the surface layer is
grayish-brown channel•y loam about 7 inches thick. The
subsurface layer is light brownish-gray loam about 6
inches thick. The underlying material is very pale
brown channel•y loam about 4 inches thick. Below that
is argillaceous limestone.
Permeability is moderate, and the available water
capacity is very low. These soils are moderately alka-
line. Their root zone extends to a depth of 10 to 20
inches. They are used for grazing.
Representative profile of LaPorte channel•y loam, 3
to 25 percent slopes, in native grass, 0.1 mile }vest and
300 feet north of the southeast corner of sec. 36, T.
24 S., R. 67 R'.
Al-0 to 7 inches, grayish-brown (lOYR 5/2) channery
loam, very dark grayish brown (lOYR 3/2) when moist;
weak, fine, granular; slightly hard, friable; nonsticky
and slightly plastic; 25 percent small limestone frag-
ments; calcareous; moderately niknline; clear, smooth
boundary.
AC-7 to 13 inches, light brownish-gray (lOYR 6/2) loam,
dark grayish brown (lOYR 9/2) when moist; weak,
medium, subangular blocky structure; slightly hard,
friable; nonsticky and slightly plastic; calcareous; 10
percent small limestone fragments; moderately; alka-
line; clear, smooth boundary.
Cca-13 to 17 inches, very pale brown (lOYR 7/3) channery
loam, brown (10]'R 5/3) when moist; massive; hard,
friable; nonsticky and slightly plastic; calcareous; 25
to 35 percent small limestone fragments; moderately
alkaline; gradual, wavy boundary.
R-17 inches, argillaceous limestone.
Content of rock fragments ranges from 10 to 35 percent.
Depth to bedrock ranges from 30 to 20 inches.
LaE-LaPorte channery loam, 3 to 25 percent slopes.
This soil is in the southwestern pal•t of the survey area.
The areas are long, narrow, and il•regular in shape and
cover as much as 600 acres.
Included with this soil in mapping are areas of Pen-
rose soils and Rock outcrop that make up about 20
pet•cent of the acreage. Also included are small areas
19
of Denver and Table Mountain soils that make up
about 5 percent.
Runoff is 1•apid, and the hazard of erosion is high.
This soil has potential for wildlife use if the habitat
can be improved. The native vegetation is Indian rice-
grass, neecileandthlead, junegl•ass, blue grama, moun-
tainmahogany, and Gambel oak. Capability unit VIIs-3,
nonil•rigated; Shallow Foothills range site.
Larkson Series
The Larkson series consists of deep, well-drained
soils. These soils fol•med on upland fans, hills, and
slopes in loess and loamy residuum weathered from
sandstone. The slope is 5 to 20 percent, and elevation
is 6,500 to 7,800 feet. The average annual precipitation
is 18 inches. The average annual temperature is 43° F,
and the fl•ost-free season is 100 to 130 clays. The native
vegetation is mainly forest plants of the lower moun-
tains.
In a representative profile the surface layer is dark
grayish-brown stony loam about 2 inches thick. The
subsurface layer is grayish-brown stony loam about
3 inches thick. The subsoil is brown clay loam about
36 inches thick. The underlying material is brown loam
that extends to a depth of 60 inches ot• mol•e.
Permeability is slow, and the available water ca-
pacity is high. The surface and subsurface layers are
slightly acid, and the subsoil and underlying material
are neutl•al. The loot zone extends to a depth of more
than 60 inches. These soils are used for grazing, feed
crops, and wood products.
Representative profile of Larkson stony loam, 6 to
20 percent slopes, in native forest, 1,760 feet south and
440 feet east of the northwest corner of sec. 6, T. 25
S., R. 67 ~V.
Ol-1 inch to 0, organic mat of needles, twigs, and pine
cones.
Al-0 to 2 inches, dark grayish-brown (lOYR 4/2) stony
loam, very dark bro+an (lOYR 2/2) when moist; weak,
thin, platy structure parting to weak, fine, granular;
soft, very friable; nonsticky and slightly plastic; neu-
tral; clear, smooth boundary.
A2-2 to 5 inches, grayish-brown (lOYR 5/2) stony loam,
very dank grayish brown (lOYR 312) when moist; very
weak, medium and fine, subangular blocky structure;
slightly hard, very friable; nonsticky and slightly plas-
tic; slightly acid; clear, smooth boundary.
BB:A-5 to 8 inches, variegated brown (lOYR 4/3) and light
brownish-gray (lOYR ti/2) clay loam, very dark grayish
bro+vn (10 ]'P. 3/3) and dark brown (101"B 3/2) when
moist; weak, medium, prismatic structure patting to
weak, medium, subangular blocky; hard, friable;
slightly sticky and plastic; thin, patchy, clay films on
pads; neutral; clear, smooth boundary.
B21t-8 to 18 inches, brown (7.5YR 5/4) heavy clay loam,
dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) when moist; moderate, medium
and fine, prismatic structure parting to moderate to
strong, medium and fine, subangular blocky; very hard,
firm; slightly sticky and plastic; thin, continuous, clay
films on pads; neutral; cleat, smooth boundary.
B22t-18 to 30 inches, brown (7.5YR 5/4) heavy clay loam,
dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) when moist; moderate, medium,
prismatic structure parting to moderate, medium, sub-
angular blocky; very hard, firm; slightly sticky and
plastic; thin, nearly continuous, clay films on pads;
neutral; clear, smooth boundary.
B3-30 to 41 inches, brawn (7.SYR 5/4) light clay loam,
dark brown (7.5YR 4/4) when moist; weak, coarse,
prismatic structure parting to weak, coarse, subangular
B-5
