beak
• INTRODUCTIOtJ
The Hawk's Plest Cline is situated in the North Fork of the Gunnison P,iver
valley. Locally, the mine is underlain by the Ptesaverde formation of upper
Cretaceous age. The formation is predominately sandstone with coal, shale and
conglomerate present in varying amounts. The "E" coal seam of the Paonia
shale member is being mined by underground methods. Igneous intrusives form
the drainage divides to the south, southeast, and east.
The North Fork of the Gunnison P,iver is deeply incised into the sedimentary
formation in a narrow "V" shaped valley. The valley sides are typically very
steep with a veneer of colluvium made-up of angular talus and slopewash of
sedimentary rock origin. The valley bottom is a narrow level floodplain
and terrace system. The alluvium is made-up of sand and rounded gravels of
• igneous and metamorphic rock origin. Sandstone gravel is present but rare due
to the high energy level of the river. Isolated terraces high above the river
occur locally along the valley.
SITE DESCP.IPTIO^J
To provide ventilation 4lestern Slope Carbon (415C) proposes to install an
air intake shaft connecting to the 1st East entry system of the Hawk's Nest
East Portal. Location of the site is in Section 12,T13S,R904J.
The proposed site for the air intake shaft was reviewed in the field on
August 25 and 26, 1980, and drilled the afternoon of August 25, 1980. The
field review indicated the cross section depicted in Figure I. Two other drill
holes were drilled at the proposed location on December 10, 1980.
•
