beak <br />• INTRODUCTIOtJ <br />The Hawk's Plest Cline is situated in the North Fork of the Gunnison P,iver <br />valley. Locally, the mine is underlain by the Ptesaverde formation of upper <br />Cretaceous age. The formation is predominately sandstone with coal, shale and <br />conglomerate present in varying amounts. The "E" coal seam of the Paonia <br />shale member is being mined by underground methods. Igneous intrusives form <br />the drainage divides to the south, southeast, and east. <br />The North Fork of the Gunnison P,iver is deeply incised into the sedimentary <br />formation in a narrow "V" shaped valley. The valley sides are typically very <br />steep with a veneer of colluvium made-up of angular talus and slopewash of <br />sedimentary rock origin. The valley bottom is a narrow level floodplain <br />and terrace system. The alluvium is made-up of sand and rounded gravels of <br />• igneous and metamorphic rock origin. Sandstone gravel is present but rare due <br />to the high energy level of the river. Isolated terraces high above the river <br />occur locally along the valley. <br />SITE DESCP.IPTIO^J <br />To provide ventilation 4lestern Slope Carbon (415C) proposes to install an <br />air intake shaft connecting to the 1st East entry system of the Hawk's Nest <br />East Portal. Location of the site is in Section 12,T13S,R904J. <br />The proposed site for the air intake shaft was reviewed in the field on <br />August 25 and 26, 1980, and drilled the afternoon of August 25, 1980. The <br />field review indicated the cross section depicted in Figure I. Two other drill <br />holes were drilled at the proposed location on December 10, 1980. <br />• <br />
