Witte, P.E.
Division Engineer
Re: Letter of February 18, 1998
Dear Mr. Worthley;
I am responding to your letter to me concerning the Agile Stone project near
Parkdale and your concern that potential blasting of stone by Agile Stone may
cause turbidity problems in your well.
Depending on the magnitude of the blasting, and it's proximity to your well,
it may be possible that the blasting could cause some temporary discoloration
in the your well water. However, I do not believe that this situation would
exist very long or have any adverse health effects. Turbidity is also fairly
easy to filter out should any occur.
Impacts on well production is very difficult to predict. One of the best
ways to determine any changes in water quality or well production is to have
a monitoring program. Ideally, you should have as much data as possible
prior to any mining activity. If no information has been gathered on water
quality and well production yet (water levels, pumping rates, water quality,
etc.) you should begin gathering this information as soon as possible. This
information ideally needs to be obtained for as many of the existing wells in
the area as possible. Testing wells before, during, and after blasting is
the best way to be able to detect changes to the groundwater and to prove
damages legally. ~
As :~ referral agency for the Division of Minerals and Geology I am hotaever
fcne_-ding yccr l~„_=_r to them a..d to u~i main office in Denver.
Sincerely,
Steven J.
