<br />nutrient deficiency is a contributing factor. If fertility test results indicate soil nutrient <br />availability plays a role in revegetation failures, appropriate corrective measures will be <br />' identified and implemented. For example, the application of custom fertilizer blends may be <br />necessary. Besides chemical amendments, cultural applications such as the interseeding of <br />nitrogen fixing plant species may be considered. <br />' Salvage and reconstruction of soil will be planned and scheduled to avoid periods when <br />unnecessary soil damage would result from these activities. Soils that are excessively dry or <br />wet experience greater damage during handling than those with moderate moisture contents. <br />To the extent possible, salvage and reconstruction activities will be performed when soil <br />moistures are normal and not az extremes. Also, frozen soils are more susceptible to damage, <br />so salvage during the winter will be avoided unless absolutely necessary. <br />' 5.1,3 Revegetation <br />Vegetation establishment and success depends upon the reconstruction of soil mediums that are <br />' suitable for plant growth and development. It is important ro select floral species capable of <br />germination and establishmem on the specific range site soils in which they are to be planted. <br />It is also important to select a variety of species capable of supporting the postmining land use, <br />while simultaneously providing vegetative cover which enhances erosion and sediment control. <br />Therefore, seed mixtures will nomrally include species which create suitable wildlife habitat <br />and browse, Potential revegetation species meeting these selection criteria that may be used in <br />' seed mixtures are listed in Table S. <br />Permanent revegetation seed mixtures will preferentially emphasize the use of native plant <br />species, with introduced species being used as necessary for special purpose plantings and as <br />' approved by the BLM. BLM requests for the use of specific species wrll be honored to the <br />extent that adequate plant cover is expected to be established for erosion control and to the <br />extent that such requests ace reasonable. Stabilization seed mixtures will include species best <br />adapted to the site planting requirements, with origin of plant materials being a minor criteria <br />for selection. Special plantings where introduced species may be used include, but are not <br />limited to, grass-lined channels and spillways, impoundment embankments, temporary cover, <br />' organic mulches and cover crops. From year to year, the commercial availability of suitable <br />seed stocks may require the substitution of equivalent species in the seed mixtures. <br />F~rample seed mixtures contained in this plan Gave been formulated to fit the environmental <br />' needs of the site, the regtirements of the postmining land use, the type of vegetation <br />community which is to be established and the purpose of the seeding (i.e., temporary cover or <br />permanent restoration). Formulation of these seed mixtures has considered environmental <br />' conditions at the Yankee Gulch Project site. The capability of the soil reconstruction medium <br />to support specific species, the degree to which plant cover is required to protect the soil from <br />erosion, the elevation range of the site, and the predominant aspect and slope are important <br />environmental factors which need to be taken into consideration. Compatibility with otlrer <br />' species in the seed mixture and with species in adjacent undisturbed vegetation communities <br />should also be considered. <br />' Atypical stabilization seed mixture is contained in Table 3. This mixture will be used when the <br />quick establishment of temporary cover to protect high value resources from excessive erosion <br />is the primary focus. This mix will be used to establish vegetation liners in drainage features, <br />' road cuts and fills with slopes steeper than 2h:ly, for vegetative filters and on disturbances <br />associated with facilities where quick establishment of vegetative cover is necessary.
