Electrical Conductivity (EC) <br />Electrical conductivity (EC) is directly related to the concentration of ions in the water. <br />As would be expected, the springs overall show decreased electrical conductivity readings <br />during the high flow conditions of late winter and early spring and increased values with <br />decreased flow. EC values during the 2002 water year were lower than those from prior <br />water yeazs. <br />Total DissoWed Solids {TDS) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) <br />Total dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations were slightly elevated in spring dischazges <br />during this water year when compared to readings from prior water years. TDS <br />concentrations decrease with overall flow decrease, temperature increase, and pH increase <br />at both springs. Total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations remained low in Spring 3 <br />this water yeaz. Spring 4 revealed a spike in TSS concentrations during the first quarter of <br />this water yeaz, with a concentration outside the normal range. Whether this represents a <br />trend, or potential contamination of the sample remains to be determined. <br />During the 2002 water year concentrations of the major ions (alkalinity, bicarbonate, <br />calcium, chloride, magnesium, manganese, and sodium) remained within observed historic <br />ranges or slightly below historic ranges. Values vary for constituent concentrations <br />between the springs, therefore brief descriptions of the trends will be presented. <br />Alkalinity (as CaCO3) <br />Alkalinity concentrations vary relatively widely for both springs. Spring 3 has values <br />ranging from 348 to 455 mg/L over the past eight water years. Spring 4 has shown <br />consistently lower concentrations than Spring 3, ranging from 242 to 440 mg/L over the <br />same period. The average concentration has not changed significantly over this period for <br />either spring. This water year, Spring 3 concentrations remained within past-observed <br />ranges. Spring 4 alkalinity concentrations was the lowest recorded over this time period <br />during the first quarter of the water yeaz. The concentration returned to within the <br />historic observed range during the Mazch 2002 sampling. <br />Bicarbonate <br />Concentrations of bicarbonate at both springs have slightly decreased over the past eight <br />water yeazs. With one exception, the highest concentrations were reported during the <br />fourth calendaz quarter of 1994 and the lowest concentrations during the first calendar <br />quarter of 2002. Bicazbonate concentrations are higher in Spring 3 (ranging from 336 to <br />555 mg/L) than those in Spring 4 (ranging from 230 to 537 mg/L) ovex the past eight <br />water yeazs. As with alkalinity, the Spring 4 concentration was the lowest recorded <br />during the first quarter of the water yeaz.
