~•
April, this lek was ground-truthed at dawn by BLM and Western Fuels
biologists. A total of 16 grouse were observed in two groups; one
group consisted of 12 males, the second group consisted of 3 males
and one female. No strutting was observed during this .field
Investigation (WIII Wright, Western Fuels Association, Lakewood,
Colo., pers. comm.).
On 18 April, while flying toward the mine permit area, six male
sage grouse were observed strutting just south of the east-west
hogback that occurs in section 13 (Map 2). The birds could not be
found, however, upon returning to this site at a lower elevation.
The site was carefully searched on two subsequent flights, but again
no grouse were observed. Because of the uncertainty of the exact
location and number of birds at this lek, the symbol shown on Map 2
1 Is accompanied by a question mark.
Other Observations
Wild horses were observed at the extrane western end of the
corridor on most flights. Group sizes and locations are shown on
Map 3. Sightings which occurred outside the mapped area (indicated
as such in Table 1) were sightings that were made further to the
west, usually from 5 to 15 miles from the locations shown on Map 3.
Raptorial birds were lndentlfled when possible during all
aerial flights. Sightings and Indentificatlons are shown on Map 1,
2, and 3 and In Table 1. Presently a study is being conducted on
Ferruginous hawks In the study area. For a recent report see
3
6
