:~
INTRODUCTION

This report presents the results of wildlife studies performed
between October 1 980 and April 1981 for the Moon Lake-Deserado coal
transportation co rridor. Investigations conducted during this

period consisted of aerial counts of big game, wild horses, raptors,
and sage grouse. The study area Includes the mine permit area and
proposed railroad and conveyor corridors. The railroad corrridor is
approximately 40 miles long, and extends in a generally east-west
direction across the Colorado-Utah border just south of Dinosaur

Colorado. The co nveyor corridor Is approximately 3.5 miles long,
and extends In a north-south direction between the mine portal and
railroad loadout area.
Field work was performed by Robert E. Stoecker, assisted by
Nancy D. Lederer. Additional support was provided by Glen Smith of
the Colorado Division of Wildlife and Steve Cranny of the Utah
Division of Wildlife Resources.
THE STUDY AREA
The study area Is shown on the Railroad Corridor Map, Sheets 1,
2, and 3 (hereafter referred to simply as Map 1, 2, or 3). Observa-
tions were also conducted south of the railroad loadout loop toward
;~ the White River (Map 1), which Is the viclntty of the proposed
conveyor corridor and coal mine.
s
The habitat near the proposed coal mine consists primarily of
open ,Juniper woodland (Junioerus osteosoerma), big sagebrush
~.
