9.0 Veeetation Types of Permit Area
3.1 Veeetation Types
The study area was characterized by three distinct vegetation
tomes. Vegetation type was a function of moisture, soil type,
aspect, slope, and elevation.
3.2 Riparian Woodland
A riparian woodland occurs at two sites in the lease areas
(?i~~re 1). The major riparian area extends the entire length
of the lease area. A second smaller riparian woodland area is
found' in the northwestern part of the lease area. Both areas
are characterized by a stream which only flows during periods
of runoff. Water marks along the streambeds suggest that water
infiltration into the soil increases as the stream flows east.
Infiltration causes the stream flow to decrease as it flows
eastward resulting in a gradual change of vegetation from west
to east.
Narrowleaved cottonwood Populus aneustifolia, ponderosa
• pine Pinus ponderosa, and wild plum Prunus americana are
do!ninant at the west end of the riparian woodlands. Ponderosa
pine is the dominant tree at the east end of the riparian area,
however a few narrowleaved cottonwoods are present. One seeded
juniper Juniperus monosperma, is also found throughout the
vegetation type. Important shrubs include willow Salix exigua,
Boulder raspberry Rubus deliciosus, snowberry Symphoricarpos
oakbrush Quercus eambelii, common gooseberries Ribes inerme,
and wax currant Ribes cereum. Oakbrush is the dominant shrub in
the west part of the riparin woodland. Western virgins bower
Clematis lieusticifolia is also found throughout the riparian
woodland.
3.3 Ponderosa Pine-Pinyon-Juniper Woodland
A ponderosa pine-pinyon-juniper woodland occupies the
majority of the lease area. Ponderosa pine Pinus ponderosa,
pinyon pine Pinus edulis and one seeded juniper Juniperus
monosperma form a patchy overstory. Ponderosa pine forms
relatively dense stands on the north facing slopes. One seeded
juniper is dominant on the east and south facing slopes. Pinyon
pine is found throughout the area. Oakbrush uercus gambelii,
skunkbrush Rhus trilobata, Diountain mahogany Cercocarpus montanus
•
4 2-4
